Interview – The Risky Issue – XIII

CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF ?

Hello ! My real name is Roman Salomatin, but mostly known under my artistic pseudonym Kreemos. I am from Moscow, Russia. I’m about making illustration, graphic design and other art works.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A GRAPHIC DESIGNER AND WHAT WAS YOUR VERY FIRST INFLUENCE ?

It was a very tangled way. I drew a little in my childhood, but never planed to connect my life with it. I didn’t have plans at all. I didn’t visit art school. I started to be interested in visual communication through skateboarding. I was in love with crazy deck graphics, colorful animated web-sites, interesting logo designs and other stuff. So I started to learn some graphic editors by myself just for fun but circumstances made it possible to enter good graphic design faculty in one of Moscow universities. Studying there, lots of self-education and working besides made me who I am now.

TODAY, WHAT IS YOUR STRONGEST INSPIRATION ?

The most of my inspiration today comes from illustrations and other graphic and typographic works of 17th – 19th century.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO US THE WAY YOU WORK ?

I always have my sketchbook with me. Where I make a very simple pencil sketches of ideas I have for the current project. It’s a very cosy format. Besides work I try to fix my observations and every little item of sence there. Even if sketches look strange and incomprehensible at first they are still answers. Answers for the future questions. You never know when comes the day to develop it into something really awesome.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR IDEAS FOR A PROJECT ?

Ideas rarely come easily. There’s no definite mechanism of making interesting solutions, there are variety of ways. Intuition can give me the right answer immediately while I am reading the task. If intuition is silent, I look through my unrealized ideas searching for something that might answer the current task. If there’s no any good idea in my sketchbooks I just sit in front of blank sheet of paper and draw everything that comes into my mind. Finger motor activity stimulates my intellect. In case of failure, I use my last tool. I look for an answer making a brainstorm using synonyms and associations.

CAN YOU TELL US THE CRAZIEST EXPERIENCE YOU’VE HAD ON A PROJECT ?

Once I painted big self-portrait for fashion photo shoot in Esquire (Russia) and threw the paint on it (like Jackson Pollock) wearing expensive clothing from fashionable showrooms. It was weird.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB/ PROJECT ?

I want to create my own brand, based on my style and my artworks. It will allow me to stay an independent artist, to make what I want, to realize my craziest ideas, to improve my artist skills and use my designer skills. I believe it will have a big success.

WHAT IS THE FEELING THAT YOU WISH TO COMMUNICATE IN YOUR WORK ?

The harmony of live and dead in my works. The love for details. The involution and eccentricity of type treatment.

WHAT IS YOUR ARTIST’S LEITMOTIV ?

I have a few rules I always aim. Not to waste my time while I can do something usefull (draw, for example). Because I have o lot things to do while life is short and will not be longer. No time to delay. Do my best, or don’t do at all. If I want to draw something I need to understand the essence. I need to pass the object through myrself. And never forget that the details make the whole.

HAVE YOU GOT OTHER CURRENT PROJECTS ?

Yes, a couple. But they are secret yet.

YOUR LAST WORDS ?

To all the artists : Quote and interpret instead of copy and imitate!
